Important Update: 2018-2019 Schedule

As a group of professionals from diverse backgrounds and organizations who come together with a shared passion for helping kids succeed in school and life, we want to provide a thoughtful program for the upcoming year that will increase engagement and expand our capacity to serve our communities.

Rather than meeting on a regular monthly basis, we have planned the following meeting schedule:

Tuesday, September 25, 2018: Regular Meeting and Presentation
8:30 am – 10:00 am
Mundelein Police Department
Presenter: Susan Squires
Topic: Bridges Out of Poverty is designed to help us recognize the hidden rules (unspoken assumptions) of generational poverty, middle class, and wealth. For example, the role of language, types of support systems and resources can be different. Understanding differences helps us to build relationships with patience, generosity, and without judgment.  Please note: This is not a full Bridges Out of Poverty training, but rather an abbreviated workshop.

Friday, October 26, 2018: Poverty Simulation Hosted by the Alliance for Human Services
More details and information about registration to come.
Rosalind Franklin University

A Poverty Simulation gives participants the chance to walk in the shoes of someone facing poverty for one month and creates an interactive learning experience for students and community members. A group of AmeriCorps VISTAs from Northern Illinois Food Bank facilitates the experience and group discussions after the simulation is complete. The simulation provides a place for participants to get out of their comfort zone and have the chance to discuss and evaluate some of their preexisting beliefs and possible biases they held. It challenges everyone to think critically about how to bring the ideas inspire in the classroom out into the community to help provide better services in alleviating poverty.

Tuesday, January 22, 2019: Regular Meeting and Discussion
8:30 am – 10:00 am
Mundelein Police Department

Tuesday, February 26, 2019: Regular Meeting and Presentation
8:30 am – 10:00 am
Mundelein Police Department
Presenter: Maggie Morales, Director of Community Leadership and Investment, Lake County Community Foundation
Topic: The Changing Demographics of Lake County

At each meeting, we will continue our tradition of having time for networking and sharing announcements.  We hope this new schedule leads us to learn from each other, to ask questions, and to add value to the work we are all doing to improve the lives of kids in Lake County.

We look forward to seeing you in September!
